Trees are like a wooly blanket on a chilly night - reliable and comforting. And we are lucky to have an abundance of them in Ireland. Any walk, any day, will bring you in contact with these gentle giants so why not start to learn, or relearn, about the great Irish trees in our lives. Check out the link for a tree spotting ramble.

Have fun with this easy download - It was created for car journeys but will work just as well for an explore around your neighbourhood. Just change up the rules as you need (or have none!) and the kids will roll with it.

Head off on a Flower Trail together. Use Wildflowers Of Ireland in the link to easily find and name flowers by their colour. The PlantNet APP is also great for identifying unknown plants you find along the way. The Skunk Cabbage found in our garden was a thrilling find for my kids - they fell around laughing at the name!

Kids love to explore trees or large sprawling shrubs. Challenge them to find a secret base on your route. This can become your story base, snack base, chatting base, hiding secret messages base or whatever you like.

Find a tree to climb which is suitable for your child's age. Take this moment to teach them about safety and check out the safety tips in the attached article.

Can you find wildlife homes? Search in old walls or in tree trunks, under rocks or logs, look for nests in trees or thorny bushes and hedges, small holes on the ground, holes in the ditches or around the base of tree trunks?

Calling all Nature Detectives -Have a scoot around your garden, green space or park for wildlife poop (scat). A great way to track animals and see what creatures were visiting the area before you. Check out the link for help.
